MAster Brick & Blockayers
Bricks are a familiar feature in the paths and decorative walls and edgings of many New Zealand gardens.
New brick units generally have a higher moisture content that settles over time. This can affect a bricks ability to handle loads that reduce the unit’s size. The reduction of moisture from the brick may also affect mortar bonding.
Before reusing bricks or blocks NZS 4210:2001 (section 188.8.131.52) requires testing of compression strengths and 7-day mortar-to-mortar bond strengths.
This should be undertaken even if a building consent is not required as part of confirming building code performance requirements will be met.
BBFNZ does not recommend reusing bricks if you are unsure whether they have come from the same veneer as this may complicate testing.
